This panel discussion will focus on business practices and presence for freelance translators (and interpreters) including topics such as marketing yourself, liability, rate-setting, networking, professional organizations, health insurance, and technology issues.

Panel Members

Laurence H. Bogoslaw, Ph.D., CT co-founded the Minnesota Translation Laboratory (MTL) with Dr. Bruce Downing at the University of Minnesota in 1996, and now directs MTL as an independent company. Dr. Bogoslaw has taught translation courses at the University of Minnesota and Century College. He holds a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages (University of Michigan), an M.A. in Italian (University of Connecticut), and is ATA-certified (Russian-English, Spanish-English). Dr. Bogoslaw has written many articles and presentations on translation, and is a published literary translator. He is Founding President (2001-2007) of the Upper Midwest Translators and Interpreters Association (UMTIA).

David Coats has been a freelance translator since 1986, and is ATA-certified for German into English. He has 37 years of experience as a psychotherapist in public and private practice; including 18 years as a Social Worker in the field of civil commitments, working closely with the Probate Court and the medical system. Prior to obtaining his Master’s in Social Work, he studied engineering and sociology. He specializes in translation of highly technical material and patents, as well as medical and legal material.

Sigrid Coats began interpreting while still in graduate school in the field of Pedagogy, and used her skills to assist numerous social service organizations in Germany. After moving to the United States, finishing her graduate education, and teaching for several years as a Special Education teacher, she began translating and interpreting on a full-time basis as Coats Translation Service. She has been ATA-Certified for translations from English into German for more than 10 years.

Marcela Estibill is the owner of Abra Palabra, a neighborhood Spanish school for adults that is located in the Mercado Central, in Minneapolis. Marcela has been a translator for 25 years and a Spanish interpreter for 16 years.  She became an ATA certified translator in 2002 and a certified MN Court Interpreter in 2009.   She has taught at Saint Catherine, the University of Minnesota, and the Resource Center of the Americas. She currently teaches at Century College in the TRIN program and also in the Spanish Department. Marcela specializes on medical and legal translations.

Claudia Giannini has a degree in Translation and Interpreting from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, as well as a Masters in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Minnesota. She has been working as a translator from English into Spanish for more than 20 years (both for non-profit organizations and private agencies/companies) and has been teaching translation courses at the University of Minnesota since 2001; she also teaches at St Olaf College. She is certified by the American Translators Association to translate from English into Spanish. Since 2007 she has had different roles on the Executive Board of UMTIA (Upper Midwest Translators and Interpreters Association).
